+ In the summer of 1995 six monks arrived in the southern Arizona desert to establish St. Anthony’s Monastery, carrying with them the sacred, millenial heritage of the Holy Mountain, Athos. Since early Christian history, this steep and rocky peninsula in northern Greece proved to be a haven for ancient Egyptian, Cappadocian, and Constantinopolitan monastics. Thus, it enjoyed a direct link with the greatest monastic establishments of ancient Christianity, preserving intact the wisdom of the holy fathers and the sacred tradition of the ancient Church. Today, the Holy Mountain consists of 20 independent monasteries, and numerous sketes and hermitages, housing Orthodox Christian monks from all over the world.
Elder Ephraim, a disciple of Elder Joseph the Hesychast, having restored and repopulated four Mt. Athos monasteries and having established several men’s and women’s monastic communities throughout Greece and North America, transferred six Athonite monks to the Sonoran Desert to start a new monastery. Upon their arrival the fathers  began with the necessary construction work, building first the main church, living quarters for the monks, the dining hall, and guest facilities. A vegetable garden, a small vineyard, citrus orchards, and an olive grove dot the landscape. An elaborate system of gardens, pathways, and gazebos with Spanish fountains truly render the monastery and its extensive grounds an oasis in the desert.
The monastery is dedicated to St. Anthony the Great, the father of monasticism, the renowned 3rd century anchorite. There are chapels dedicated to Saints Seraphim of Sarov, Demetrios of Thessalonica, John the Baptist, George the Great Martyr, Nicholas the Wonderworker, and Panteleimon the Healer. The main church is dedicated to Saints Anthony and Nectarios the Wonderworker.
The monastery follows the coenobitic rule of monastic life: a brotherhood of monks and novices holding all things in common follow a daily schedule of prayer and work under obedience to the abbot, their spiritual father. The monks’ daily program begins at midnight with personal prayer time and spiritual reading, followed by the cycle of morning prayers and the Divine Liturgy. After a light breakfast and a rest period, the monks begin their work day, attending to prayer and their tasks till evening. Tasks include, among others, construction, groundskeeping, vinedressing, gardening, woodworking, publishing, food preparation, and offering hospitality. The day ends with evening Vespers followed by dinner and Compline.

Αγία Χλόη - Saint Chloe

                                     20X15cm - 7,8X5,9inch. Golden leaf background 22K.

+ The first Sunday every year following February 13th we celebrate  the memory of the Apostles' Paul associates Titiou, Ioustou, Chloe and Crispus.

We only have biographical information about  St. Chloe. Accordingly, St Chloe, who was a Corinthian (and not as some other sources mention that she was from Ephesus ) was a very valuable contributor and active member to the St. Paul in the Church of Corinth.

She was spiritually connected with the great Apostle Paul. She stood  by the Apostle in his missionary ministry, the best she could. Anxious for the prosperity of the Church of Corinth, she lived the same agony as the Apostle. Therefore, when she encountered in the Church quarrels, she hastened to inform with some people of her house the Apostle Paul, where he was then in Ephesus, to prevent the dispute.  The verse is clear:  (A Corinth, 11). This information was as a major cause for the Apostle Paul to write his first letter to the Corinthians.

The information that was quick send to the apostle Paul by Chloe, testifies over the inner world of her soul and her deep faith in Christ. That is why Saint Chloe, did not want to have conflicts. She did not want quarrels. She did not want Christians to be divided. She couldn't stand the beginning of existence of many groups of believers, she strongly desired the True one and only. That was her opinion: "I 'm/come from Christ" (A' Corinth, 12). She wanted the Church of Corinth, to be a whole body and Christ to be the Head. Exactly as it is recorded by the Apostle in his letter to Kolassaeis. "And He is he the head of the body of the Church" (Col. A, 18). He, Jesus.
Such a desire has to be burning in our own souls. The desire for unity. So when you see Christian unity is breaking, rush, like Chloe did, and seek the intervention of your spiritual father, to restore it.

Άγιος Σάββας ο Ηγιασμένος - Saint Savvas the sanctified

                                        20X15 cm - 7,8X5,9inch. Gold leaf as background 22K.

+ Saint Savvas the Sanctified (5th December)

He was born in Mutalaska, near Caesarea in Cappadocia of pious Christian parents, John and Sophia, during the year 439. His father was a military commander. Traveling to Alexandria on military matters, his wife went with him, but they left their five-year-old son in the care of an uncle. When the boy reached eight years of age, he entered the monastery of St. Flavian l...ocated nearby. The gifted child quickly learned to read and became an expert on the Holy Scriptures. In vain did his parents urge St. Savvas to return to the world and enter into marriage.

When he was seventeen years old he received monastic tonsure, and attained such perfection in fasting and prayer that he was given the gift of wonderworking. In 456, after spending ten years at the monastery of St. Flavian, he traveled to Jerusalem, and from there to the monastery of St. Euthymius the Great (January 20). But St. Euthymius sent St. Savvas to Abba Theoctistus, the head of a nearby monastery that practiced a strict cenobitic rule. St. Sabbas lived in obedience at this monastery until the age of thirty.

After the death of the Elder Theoctistus, his successor blessed St. Savvas to seclude himself in a cave. On Saturdays, however, he left his hermitage and came to the monastery, where he participated in divine services and ate with the brethren. After a certain time St. Sabbas received permission not to leave his hermitage at all, and he struggled in the cave for five years.

St. Euthymius attentively directed the life of the young monk, and seeing his spiritual maturity, he began to take him to the Rouba wilderness with him. They set out on January 14, and remained there until Palm Sunday. St. Euthymius called St. Savvas a child-elder, and encouraged him to grow in the monastic virtues.

When St. Euthymius fell asleep in the Lord (+473), St. Savvas withdrew from the Lavra and moved to a cave near the monastery of St. Gerasimus of Jordan (March 4). In 478, he moved to a cave on the cliffs of the Kedron Gorge southeast of Jerusalem. His hermitage formed the foundation of the monastery later named after him (Lavra Mar Saba) and known in ancient sources as the Great Lavra. After several years, disciples began to gather around St. Savvas, seeking the monastic life. As the number of monks increased, the lavra came into being. When a pillar of fire appeared before St. Savvas as he was walking, he found a spacious cave in the form of a church.

In 491, Patriarch Salustius of Jerusalem ordained him a priest. In 494, the patriarch named St. Savvas the archimandrite of all the monasteries in Palestine.

St. Savvas founded several other monasteries including the New Lavra, the Lavra Heptastomos, and Heptastomos. [1] Many miracles took place through the prayers of St. Savvas: at the Lavra: a spring of water welled up, during a time of drought, there was abundant rain, and there were also healings of the sick and the demoniacs. St. Sabbas composed the first monastic Rule of church services, the so-called "Jerusalem Typikon", that became accepted by all the Palestine monasteries. St. Savvas died in his lavra on December 5, 532 and is buried in a tomb in the courtyard between two ancient churches in the midst of the remnant of the great Lavra Mar Saba monastery. His relics had been taken to Italy in the twelfth century by Crusaders, but were returned to the monastery by Pope Paul VI in 1965 in a goodwill gesture toward the Orthodox.

St. Savvas championed the Orthodox cause against the monophysite and Origenist movements of his day, personally calling upon the Roman emperors in Constantinople, Anastasius I in 511 and Justinian in 531, to influence them in opposing the heretical movements.

St. Savvas reposed in 532.
Troparion of St. Sabbas the Sanctified, Tone 1
Sanctified from youth, O righteous Sabbas, thou wast a summit of righteousness equal to the Angels. Thou didst lead a heavenly life, and guide thy flock to godliness by word and deed. And they cry to thee with faith: Glory to Him Who has strengthened thee; glory to Him Who has crowned thee; glory to Him Who through thee works healings for all.

Αγία Αγλαΐα - Saint Aglaia

                                                    20X30cm - 7,8X11,8inch.

Aglaïa was a prosperous woman who lived in the region around Rome in the time of Diocletian and had Bonifatius as a slave. Bonifatius was her steward, very good-looking in appearance, generous to the poor and kind-hearted, but with a liking for drink and debauchery. They soon fell in love and had a clandestine relationship, since the difference in their social station would not permit any thought of marriage.
But they both became believing Christians and therefore had regrets about their relationship. As they were seeking a solution, they heard that persecutions were being carried out in the East against Christians. So they decided that Bonifatius should go there, find relics of martyrs and bring them home, so that the blessing of the relics would exonerate them from the guilt they felt.
Aglaïa provided companions, money and supplies and preparations were made for the journey. But when he was ready to leave, the good-hearted Bonifatius turned to his mistress and asked if she would accept his own bones as holy relics and honour them. She thought this was one of his usual jokes and paid no more heed as she sent him on his way.
After a long and tiring journey, the fellowship arrived at Tarsus in Cilicia, where they had been told that a great persecution was being carried out against the Christians. After they had found an inn and were preparing to rest, Bonifatius said he was going out for a walk in the town, to see what was going on.
So he went out and asked where the Christians were being martyred. “In the stadium”, came the reply and he went there straight away. What he found was a real place of martyrdom, with a host of Christians being tortured and taken off to martyrdom by the soldiers. When he ran to kiss and honour the martyrs who were about to die, he presented himself before the chief of the persecutors and declared that he, too, was a Christian and wished to be martyred. The officers sent him away, but he insisted to such an extent that he annoyed them and, in the end, they arrested him. After subjecting him to many harsh trials, they then decapitated him.
Time went by and Bonifatius’ companions at the inn awaited his return. In the beginning, they thought he was out having a good time in some tavern or brothel. But when he still was not back much later, they decided to go out and search for him. When they asked people and described him in detail, they found out that he had gone to the stadium. And once they got there, it was not long before they learned the truth.
They grieved bitterly and found both his head and his body. Having bribed the soldiers guarding the inanimate corpses of the martyrs, they took Bonifatius’ body and set out on the return journey.
Back in their homeland, they gave Bonifatius’ relics to his mistress. She at once remembered the last words of her beloved, mourned him and then built a beautiful church on the spot where they buried him. She herself spent the rest of her life in this church, doing only good works. When she, too, departed this life, they buried her next to Bonifatius. Both of them later were responsible for great miracles.
The Church honours them on 19 December.
Apolytikion 4th Tone
You fervently followed the way of the martyrs confessing Christ before unbelievers, O Boniface. You gave your body to modest Aglaia as an imperishable treasure. Healing and mercy flow from it for the word.
